Week 9 - IMPOSSIBLE THINGS: Critique
The first expo we went to was team Rapid Eye Movement: Expo of Impossible Things.
We were asked to wait in a room of fluff made to look like clouds, which was perfect for setting the theme of the expo, sleep and dreams. This was also a clever way of staggering us through the expo so even though we weren't able to go through yet, we still had a memorable experience.
Next we had a health and safety briefing which was short and informative, everything you could want when learning about health and safety.
The first stall we went through was a hot dark room where we had to find keys to unlock a witch. I didn't enjoy this stall as I felt it was too difficult to finish, and although I understand they were trying to make us uncomfortable with the heat, I didn't see the point of having to be uncomfortable as it was already difficult enough. This would have been better with a bit more light and not as many stress inducing factors like the strobes and heat.
Next we went through a maze blind folded which was fun although I saw quite a few people not wanting to go through. This would have been better if it was longer.
The boxes on our heads were a very strange experience which I enjoyed as I've never had anything like that on my head before. It did feel a little pointless though, it would have been better if we got some sort of prize or outcome at the end.
I really liked the VR room as I've never experienced this before. I wanted to stay in there longer! I though it was very clever how they gave you a post card at the end as now I'll always remember this stall.
I did not enjoy the one where you had to sit in the POWER, WEALTH OR IMMORTALITY. I felt it was really pointless and a bit depressing as every tent said whatever you choose you'll always end up sad or lonely. Which I don't think is true.
The big tree on the wall was a very clever idea how it died a little when someone put rubbish in the bin, and gained life back when someone recycled. The only reason I knew about this though was because I had a friend in that group, otherwise I wouldn't have realised what was happening. It would have been cooler if it made noise or was bigger or something that really showed us what was happening.
I really liked the ending how it was like we came out of a womb, also using a basic activity of leaving the expo and turning it into something memorable. I didn't think it exactly 'went' though because it was about sleeping, not being in a womb. It was entertaining though.
Overall I did enjoy my experience at this expo, but I felt like a lot of the stalls were kind of pointless and I felt like wait what just happened? I think most of them stuck to the theme pretty well, and keeping the whole room dark helped with the sleep effect.
